Being a Runner
Hi! My name is Elena Spinuzzi! I am a freshman at Reading Memorial High School!
My Favorites
My favorite subject in school is biology, even though I am not the greatest at it. My favorite food is pasta and my favorite color is blue.
Apart from School Work
Being a freshman at RMHS, I ran cross country in the fall, and track in the winter and spring.I wasn't really interested in taking part in a drama production or a singing group.

There are two main types of running that you can run in high school. Cross country in the fall and track in the winter and spring.
Cross country is strictly distance running. Each week, we do the same types of workouts and its scheduled out perfectly. Monday is always pre-meet, because on Tuesdays we have meets. Meets are always three miles, and either on roads, grass, or trails. Wednesday are our recovery days, where we run long distances. Thursday is hill workout or speed workout. Friday and Saturday are "whatever" days, but mainly we just go for a good distance run. On Sunday, we don't have practice. Then once Monday comes again, the cycle starts over again! Cross country is a fun sport, and I recommend anyone who likes running should try it.
The next sport is track. It can happen in the winter or spring. I took part in both.Track can consist of many things, including distance/mid distance running, sprinting, and field events. I run mid distance, specifically 400 meters. One lap around the track.Track is a pretty serious sport, but it can also be fun in different ways. The workouts are difficult at some times, but once you complete them you feel good knowing that you did it all.
Running in general is a hard sport, not many people like it, and they complain about it a lot. I prefer cross country/track over a lot of different sports, I find that there are not as many skills and fundamentals that you need to know for them, and I like how its a team sport, but also an independent sport. It's easy to improve your times, and you can quickly find that out for yourself, especially during cross country.
Running Tips
- Stretch before and after running
- Run with a friend - for motivation
- Drink water before you run
- Set goals for yourself (you'll never get better if you don't push yourself!)
- In general, eat healthy
- Make sure you have supportive shoes and comfortable clothes
- Gradually increase the level of your workouts, don't start off too hard or fast
- Always stay positive
- If you don't like a workout, just give it your all and then you'll be done faster (the faster you run, the faster you're done!)
- Take short breaks (3-5 minutes) in between track workouts. Don't stand around while taking your break, keep moving to stay loose.
